Usage creates innovation: future is local
But it’s not because we have the same mp3 players or the same cell phones in hand that we use them in the same way: teenagers in Paris, Tokyo and Beijing don’t have the same usage of their mobile phones for instance. And globalization doesn’t appear as the objective for teenagers: for them, life will be different, somewhere between local and global – but certainly more local than global.
Innovation and globalisation
Economy becomes more and more global, especially in high tech industry: there are no more local computer, television or cell phone manufacturers – only local assemblers, essentially working for retailers. All the leading companies – Sony, Samsung, Dell, Hewlett Packard, Nokia, etc. operate at a worldwide level. Consolidation goes really quickly, generally by external growth, leaders buying their challengers.
In most cases innovation appears as the main driver, as for the cell phone industry: cell phone industry is an extremely recent one where technicians establish worldwide standards in order to have the possibility to sell the same products in Paris, London or New-York. When there is no past, no history, it’s quicker and easier for the whole industry to act in a same and common direction.
Television is an old high tech industry – more than half a century! Transition from black and white to color abolished some differences in Europe, mainly between French Secam and German Pal. But some divergence remained – for instance at a global level, with American NTSC. Today new transition to flat screens (LCD, PDP) and to High Definition (Mpeg 4) accelerates worldwide unification.
This recent phenomenon coincides with the development of digital. Clearly, digital speeds up innovation and globalization: 30 years ago, the first experiments of analog High Definition television failed pitifully, mainly because European and Japanese industries dashed into a wild and total competition, refusing any discussion. Remember the story
In 1972, NHK, the main Japanese TV channel, starts research on High Definition television, supported by the government; 1984: European Broadcasting Union gives its agreement to the standard D2 Mac Paquet, developed by France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom. 1986: Japan submits their HiVision to the Consultative Committee for International Radio, but not compatible with American NTSC.
European industries improve the development of D2 Mac Paquet with new HD MAC whereas Japanese HiVision is modified to a NTSC compatible version: Muse. But American government starts at the same time initial research on digital TV.
Millions $ will be invested and simply lost: In 1993, in front of the obvious failure of the standard, Philips and Thomson abandon D2 MAC, as do the Japanese the following year with Muse. It will be necessary to wait until 2006 and the football world cup in Europe for High Definition television to really begin.
Digital High Definition television. And thanks to a global standard based on Mpeg4. Digital drives innovation. And innovation drives innovation.
Nevertheless, even with digital, everything is not perfect and sometimes industry plays again and again the same old song – repeating the same mistakes: today DVD recorders multiply non compatible standards as did 30 years ago the VCR with JVC’s VHS, Sony’s Betamax and Philips’ V2000.
However the story began very well: when the first devices arrived on the market in 1997 in France, it was under the best auspices: a single standard, the praises of the press, a promising future in spite of high prices. Only two shadows in the picture: an unofficial format called DivX, allowing burning a film onto a simple CD; and the Chinese preference for the competitor Video CD.
But DVD was not burnable. With the launch of the first burners, there started a new war between more or less compatible standards: consumers had to learn the differences between DVD +R, DVD + RW, DVD RAM and DVD-R /-RW! Good luck! And moderators heard again and again the same complaints during focus groups: “I remember what my father said about his old Betamax.” A never ending story!
DVD size is too small to burn a film in High Definition quality: unluckily, if the next generation of burners will strongly improve quality, it will not correct the error of the previous one: the war is always so violent between Blu-ray and HD-DVD whereas Chinese want to launch their own standard, called EVD.
Nevertheless the dominating trend is industrial globalization, with the emergence of quasi-monopolies: how many brands in cell phones’ industry, how many for computers? On this last market, globalization is more in the components: if there are a lot of local makers – essentially working for retailers – for the chip, you just have the choice between Intel and AMD.
Because high tech products are the same from one extremity of the planet to the other, high tech globalization is quickly on its way: citizens use the same machines, in the same way, there are less differences between a teenager in Tokyo and in Sao Paolo than between this teenager and his grandfather! Technology standardizes our world.
In this global game, some countries are more important than others: cell phones, LCD televisions, mp3 players, everything comes from Akihabara in Tokyo – as it was the case for luxury and perfumes in Paris. Japanese teenagers show the direction to a global young generation: tomorrow we’ll use the products they buy today. Knowing the high tech future is easy: we see it in Akihabara streets!
Innovation is usage
That’s what high tech managers think – or still try to think. But reality, as it appears more and more often, is completely different. In this paper our approach will be mainly based on observation of failures and successes, and then questioning people to explain these failures and successes and understand the evolutions of their day to day practices.
Failures are not exceptions, as for the DVD recorders: reality is more the opposite. Best case is certainly the 2.5 generation on cell phone market.
GSM was the second generation for cell phone, the transition from analog to digital, but limited to voice. UMTS will be the third generation with high speed communication for voice, data and images. Between GSM and UMTS, 2.5 generation was seen as a great improvement, optimizing immediately GSM possibilities with data and images.
Called i-mode in Japan, 2.5 generation became a great success: teenagers immediately bought i-mode cell phones – and used i-mode services: to discover the best restaurant in the street, to know the location of the latest fashionable disco, to send messages to their friends and reply to their parents, etc.
Called WAP in France (for Wireless Application Protocol), 2.5 generation was a disaster because in our country nobody wanted to carry in his pocket a mini computer to connect to Internet, to chat, to surf in the street: speaking with friends, or informing them of a delay was enough.
Technique is less important than usage: therefore WAP didn’t succeed in Europe. Usage creates innovation – not engineers! The real innovation – and success – of the last five years is SMS. However SMS is not a technical innovation, neither a marketing innovation: no telecom operator believed in such a product. But the younger generation used them a lot: why?
Communication has completely changed since the beginning of the 21st century. Last century was marked by the transition from closed systems as in the little country villages to open systems as described by Palo Alto researchers; but now the younger generation is moving to less and less structured systems, without constraint at all. We'll come back on this point.
Consumer is the real creator of the products he uses… and sometimes it’s surprising. Surprising for engineers when he gives sense to products in which they do not believe, as SMS: SMS is a very poor system of communication, especially when you can add pictures and data to the voice!
Surprising when users transform a product into another. Recently a French telecom operator experimented with mobile television on a cell phone: 185 persons received a nice terminal – the same size as a normal cell phone with a wonderful LCD screen.(*) The main purpose of the test was to discover where and when people would watch television : at the hairdresser’s, at the office, waiting for somebody in a bar, etc.
Positive surprise: 84 % of the users think that the mobile telephone is well adapted to television. Quality of image and sound are approved by a large majority – respectively 98 % and 95 % of satisfied users. News appears as the most relevant program for telephone, ahead of music and weather reports.
But the real surprise comes from the place and time where people look at television on their mobile phone: 70% watch it by night… at home. For them, this kind of telephone is above all a second TV set! A nice tool to watch the end of a soccer game in bed, without annoying his spouse.
From a methodological point of view, it’s no more possible to conduct consumer research as usual. Imagine: you write a nice concept board about mobile television; you moderate a qualitative group with early adopters - to be sure they will correctly understand the product – and you try to know when and where they will watch this television.
“In a coffee shop, waiting for a friend” or “In a bus, on my way to my office”, etc. They will imagine all situations – the same situations engineers and marketers would imagine too. Mistake: in real world, they’ll use it at home, in bed!
When you question somebody about usages he could have, he necessarily answers with his semantic memory – where concepts are built and analyzed; but his life leaves its own traces somewhere else: in his episodic memory. This is why nobody can really imagine what their future will be: nobody can anticipate something in episodic memory with semantic memory.
The only pertinent way to determine what is an innovation or not, is look at citizens’ behavior: it’s why we researchers today replace more and more in depth psychological interviews or focus groups with ethnology and pure observation. To understand what “connectivity” really means for consumers today, it’s more relevant to visit them at home and see their practices and solutions.
It’s what we did at Thomson last year. First we identified Young couples without children and Young parents as key targets for connecting products because as all young people, they are deeply involved in computing and nomadic digital products; and at the same time they start a new life where home and family become more and more central, including television.
They have a lot of music, photos, videos they like to share with friends: to understand how they achieve it, we sent an ethnologist with a cameraman to visit 12 homes and discuss this point with them: “Tell me how you show all your pictures to your friends?” The reality is amazing: they take a lot of photos… they never look at, neither alone, nor with someone else.
And when you ask them why they don’t connect for instance their camera to the TV set, they reply: “I didn’t know it was possible”! However we are questioning early adopters, high tech lovers but their behaviors are totally unexpected: they photograph all the time with their cameras, webcams or cell phones, select only a few pictures which they send to all the addresses they have in their mail box, then they forget them.
Another example: in 2004 we had to understand consumer concerns and expectations towards video recorders with built in hard disk drive. These kinds of products are like a VHS video recorder, but the tape is replaced by an hard disk drive: it facilitates recording (you can easily record hours of program); another advantage is the time shifting: you can “pause” a live program, answer a call, and start again thanks to a temporary recording on the hard disk.
We organize qualitative groups amongst early adopters and time shifting appears as the most appreciated feature: so fascinating! Then we gave a prototype to each attendee and questioned them after two weeks: time shifting was no more a useful feature because it breaks the domestic cohesion. Conversely they approved by a large majority the ease of recording: reality of use completely changes the perception and the destination of the product!
Global or not global
Two opposite movements cross our civilization, one bound to technological innovation, the other to usages engendered by this innovation: the point is to know if worldwide high tech products will necessarily generate global usages or if usages will nevertheless remain local and convert global innovative high tech products into local products. Which one is the most powerful trend?
If it’s the first one, the whole planet will act tomorrow in the same way: we’ll listen to the same music on the same mp3 players, watch the same movies on the same LCD TV sets, drive the same cars thanks to the same GPS Navigation System. Some differences will remain: British citizens will continue to drive on the left side and French ones on the right, and German movies will be translated – at least shown with subtitles – on Japanese television; but music is already global and Japanese teenagers listen to Franz Ferdinand or Placebo as do French or American ones: since Elvis Presley and the Beatles, rock and roll is universal and the language doesn't matter.
Actors eat the same food in movies we see on our TV sets when we are having dinner at home – and we choose the same meals in restaurants afterwards: Chinese or Italian food is no more exotic food – just a part of global food: there are so many Chinese or Italian restaurants in New-York, Paris or Sidney! That’s what the great majority of futurologists think.
But if the second is the most powerful trend, we’ll use in totally different ways the same global products: TV sets, cell phones, microwave ovens will be identical in Paris or in Tokyo – coming from the same factories in Korea or China – but we’ll eat different meals, watch television in different ways, we’ll call our friends for different reasons – not at 4 PM to have a cold dinner with a glass of beer at 6 PM in front of a baseball program!
Changes are quicker amongst young teenagers than mature citizens: you accept more easily the changes when you don’t have too many anchored customs. Evaluate the power of these two movements – technology versus usage – through two symbolic products of this generation: mp3 players and mobile phones.
mp3 is certainly one of the most successful products of the last ten years: every teenager has one: thye can’t live without one. All teenagers walk or cycle in the streets of Berlin, Seoul or Chicago with their player in their pocket, the earphones plugged into their ears, listening to the Artic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand and/or Eminem: music and music players are global – and usages too.
Yes. And No! And conclusions are certainly more complex!
Music was global before mp3 and mp3 players: Mozart or Bach were played at the courts of all the European kingdoms, and then listened to by the whole European bourgeoisie; they were as popular at the opera in Paris as in Moscow. During the second part of the twentieth century, radio boosted the explosion of the rising music, but didn't create the love of the music amongst young generations.
The Beatles – according to the famous word from John Lennon – were more famous than Jesus Christ, not because radio broadcast their music but because their music expressed the rebellion of a whole generation to the consumer society; today Placebo or Franz Ferdinand are not famous because their songs are shared on Internet but their songs are shared on Internet because they are popular. Because, since Elvis Presley, rock and roll is (one of) the music of the young people!
And Eminem? Eminem is certainly the best example. Because Eminem is not rock and roll but rap: rap is another kind of rebellion and contestation, more spontaneous than rock and roll today. Rap exists in all suburbs over the world, at least in developed countries: rap is the music of the young and poor tribes in America, Eminem comes from Detroit. If Eminem is a well known star now, it’s because he personifies a certain kind of revolt against establishment. A common revolution for all poor young people.
At the same time, rap is the link gathering a tribe living in the same suburb: viewed from this angle, rap is no more global, only micro-local. And the boys who listen to the same music on the same Boom Box (big portable audio system) as the boys of the next street don’t share anything with them: they don’t belong to the same tribe; they don’t live in the same world – because their world stops at the corner of the street!
Technology supports musical globalization – but doesn’t create it. It’s not because young boys, all over the world have the same mp3 players or the same Boom Boxes that they share the same values, the same expectations. Reality is exactly the opposite: it’s because music was global first that it became so rapidly global. Culture before high tech.
Same analyze for cell phones: in this case, technological innovation was 50 years late versus civilization! Or even more!
When western countries were more or less agricultural, villagers met every day on the main square of the village; when they had to discuss, they walked easily from one house to another. In the small towns, it was not really more difficult; even in Balzac’s books, at the middle of the 19th century, Parisians walked continuously from one district to another: big cities remained human.
After the drift from the land, cities became suddenly too big: it was no longer possible to keep in touch with all ones friends or relatives. The telephone helped to fix appointments: nobody spends one hour in traffic jams if they are not sure to meet the people they want to speak to. It lacks flexibility but it’s nevertheless a great progress.
Towns become bigger and bigger. Too quickly: we lose hours in buses or in traffic jams, and people regret the “good old times” when it was so easy to cross the village main street to find friends in a bar.
Cell phones give back this lost flexibility: wherever you are, you can reach your friends and decide how to meet them; if you are late in a traffic jam, you can call and inform your friends you are coming.
When you ask consumers about mobile phones, they don’t answer: “What a great idea”, but: “Why did nobody do it before?” Yes, why: in all countries, cities became too big during the last century, it was urgent to design something to help their inhabitants. Mobile phones became immediately global because the problem was common to all countries: all cities were too big, too inhuman.
Again, technological innovation doesn’t create globalization but follows it.
Usage is local
Even if technological innovation doesn’t create globalization, it could accelerate it? Technological innovation could standardize usages – convert local usages into global usages. However the opposite seems more evident: local usages, local ways of life slow down globalization. Cell phones appear again as the best example.
We wrote above that i-mode became immediately a great success in Japan while WAP was a total disaster in France. However cell phones were as successful in Japan as in France: why its upgrading diverged from one country to another? Because in spite of appearances, the Japanese and the French use telephones in different ways. Even if they live in gigantic cities, people from Paris and Tokyo are more different than similar.
As in Tokyo, Parisians needed tools to fix appointments with their friends at night and / or to advise them they would be late because of traffic jams, for instance – and it’s why cell phones appeared as a great idea in Europe as well as in Asia.
A traffic jam is a good reason to call the person you are going to meet – even if it’s dangerous to call whilst you are driving! There are so many traffic jams in Paris between 5.PM and 7.PM; after 8.PM driving becomes easier in our country… but not in Tokyo: there, traffic never stops before midnight.
Why? Because Japanese people don’t live at home, like us, but outside, in streets, bars, restaurants – everywhere, but not at home. At least, men and young women: when they have children, mothers stay definitively at home, often with grandparents – Tokyo misses flats and flats are so small that often three generations live in the same place without real intimacy!
And men don’t stay home, they prefer to spend the night in bars and restaurants with friends and colleagues. Japanese people don’t live outside because their flats are not really convenient, it’s more the opposite: they don’t need bigger flats because they prefer to live somewhere else. It’s not a recent phenomenon: even when there were no cars and no jams in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka or Kobe, men spent their time in bars. For them, bar-maids were as important as their own wife: Kafu in Tsuyu no atosaki (**) tells Kimie’s story, barmaid in Ginza… in 1931!
Japanese life changed after the beginning of the last century – as French life did too. But not their fundamental bases: Japanese men return home very late – streets, bars, restaurants are their real homes! And they need Internet tools in their pocket exactly as we need Internet tools at home: they order a book at Amazon in a bar with their cell phone exactly as we do… only at home on our computer.
Young people modify their habits more quickly: in appearance, they are as nomadic in France as in America as in Japan. But even with an i-mode cell phone in their pocket, Parisian teens prefer to send and receive e-mails or order goods via Internet at home than outside: even having an i-mode cell, they keep their habits – high tech products don’t change usages if there is no fundamental need.
Sometimes French teens need a quicker communication than e-mails – but very limited communication: just few words to fix an appointment or to say hello to a good friend – no answer needed in this last case. It’s why French teens use SMS a lot: just a way to keep in touch to close friends, immediately and in an extremely easy way.
For many reasons usage will remain local. Television for instance: news on TF1 and France 2 – the two main French TV channels – starts at 8.PM every night and at 6.PM on BBC1 from Monday to Friday, and later during the weekend, in the UK. Even in front of a wonderful High Definition plasma screen, English people will continue to watch the news at 6.PM with a cold dinner while their French cousins will prefer a more substantial meal later.
Main television is sometimes in the kitchen in the UK – a bigger kitchen than in France – and in the basement in America, with a billiard table or other games: there is no problem of space, and people in the Midwest generally buy impressive projectors. In Japan, it’s exactly the opposite and it explains the success of LCD television – and at first mobile television too! High tech innovation will not change historical usages… and the size of the flats too!
Tomorrow will be local
Even if high tech innovation will not change the size of the flats, maybe it could modify habits and usages which are not linked to fundamental patterns – as outdoor life in Japan. And certainly the young generation is the most capable of changing, they have no prejudices: we’ll have to investigate the relationships between teenagers in France, to understand what the principal trends are and if these trends go towards globalization or not.
But before, let’s consider the last trends on Internet, independently of any consideration for age or other socio-demographics. At its start Internet was designed as global: the best solution to improve scientific exchanges between researchers, between universities. Languages appeared as the main barrier to globalization – and today, encyclopedias as Wikipedia are available in many languages even if the concept is global.
Nevertheless the first trend was global – the myth of the Global Village. But today, the village becomes more and more local – as a real village. New communities, new sites arise everywhere, sites whose content is to bring together people of the same district: neighborhood networks to share with close people, from the same street, even the same house!
Recently in a popular district of Paris a new site appeared called: Peuplades – Tribes in English. The purpose was to help people living in the same area to meet and to develop communities: for baby sitting, for cultural trips, for wine lovers, etc. Last tribes: the musicians of the Epinettes, the data processing specialists in Montparnasse, the housewives from Place de Clichy, etc. The Epinettes, Montparnasse, Place de Clichy: as many small areas in Paris!
Peuplades.net is growing very fast. Other communities are born here and there, more and more often based on blogs. What is a blog? “Short for Web log, a blog is a Web page that serves as a publicly accessible personal journal for an individual. Typically updated daily, blogs often reflect the personality of the author”, according to Wikipedia.org.
“Knitting wool passion” helps ladies who like to make their own clothes; “It’s in Besançon” indicates the main events coming in this town; and on “Paris 16th”, we learn that: “Psyreso association proposes next Tuesday at 8.PM a discussion about: how to loose weight thanks to psycho”. Internet becomes more and more the best solution to solve local problems.
Teenagers love blogs too – they use them a lot: more than 4 millions teenagers’ blogs on Skyblog in France; Skyblog is the Internet site of one of the most popular Rap radio stations in our country. And again, all these blogs appear local, immediately local: some do not exceed the limits of one college. But in reality these blogs are neither global, nor local: they are somewhere else, in another dimension.
Tomorrow will be somewhere else
Blogs illustrate one of the most important changes in our society, in terms of communication.
To understand what’s going to happen tomorrow, we have to explain what happened yesterday when our civilization moved from a country life to an urban life: our society faces today a fundamental change, exactly as one century ago, when life and communication were only local – but moving to global.
Living in a village is living in a closed community: you must accept and respect many rules – non-written rules, imposed by tradition. For instance, a young lady can’t stay alone with a man: if she does such behavior, she will be seen as a loose woman. If you live in a Christian village, you have to go to church on Sunday: if not, you will be quickly suspected of all wrong-doings, etc.
In a town, you belong to different communities: your family, your colleagues, your friends, etc. Rules are different from one group to another and your behavior can easily change too: a subjected husband at home will become a grumbling director at his office and a really charming friend in a pub. If this person becomes grumbling with his friends, he will lose them: to remain in this group, he has to accept its rules, as in the previous village. But he can move from one group to another, it’s really easy in a bigger town.
It’s why Palo Alto Group calls these communities open systems: as the closed system from the 19th century, strong rules link members of a same group – but everyone is free to change, to move from one group to another:
“Human interaction is described as a communication system, characterized by the properties of general systems: time as a variable, system-subsystem relations, wholeness, feedback, and equifinality. On-going inter-actional systems are seen as the natural focus for study of the long term pragmatic impact of communicational phenomena”.(***)
If one member doesn’t respect the rules of his group – his system – he will be quickly excluded from the group; if 10% or more of the members don’t respect the rules, the group will explode.
Some rules are specific to each particular group, but some are common to all groups – as defined by Palo Alto: wholeness, feedback or equifinality, etc. A system not governed by these rules is not stable – it will be rapidly destroyed. For instance, a system where there is no feedback is either a dictatorship, or a non-system; just a juxtaposition of persons without communication.
Each citizen, in any country, belongs to several local groups – or systems: his neighbors, his family, his friends, etc. His job too, very often: he goes to his office, meets colleagues, clients, etc. But when you are senior manager in an international company, you have to manage employees in different countries, you have to take the plane to meet colleagues in America or Russia, etc. One of the different systems you belong to is global.
Between local and global, there’s national, continental system: when you look at the news on TF1 or RAI 1, you become a member of a broad French or Italian community, even if the feed back is poor: you just have the right to turn off your set if you disagree, and now you can answer with SMS.
We all belong to different communities – systems according to Palo Alto definition. And some of these systems are local, others are national or global. And because communication is system, and system is communication – still according to Palo Alto definitions – we take part more and more in national and international communities: television and now Internet.
The first communities which arose on Internet respected Palo Alto rules: often a moderator helped members; and the one who didn’t play the game could be excluded for the protection of the group itself. And the first blogs developed by American journalists respected Palo Alto rules too, reporting the same news as the traditional media, but with another analysis, another point of view.
The main difference between blogs and mass media was the quality of feed-back: on a blog, you can react, discuss, and develop contradictory opinions. A journalist blog in America, or now in Paris, is a national or multinational system, respecting Palo Alto rules.
The teenagers’ blogs are different: they don’t respect any rules. First there is no real feed-back: everyone is invited, everyone can do what they want – even tags, modify the existing blog. Blog is an object which doesn’t really belong to its creator.
These blogs don’t respect the main property of general systems: wholeness. Blogs are the zero degree of community – as SMS are the zero degree of communication: the borders are not known, even by its first designer. It’s not like a body – the best image is certainly the synopsis: something “long-winded”, the possibility for “people” to establish “contact” and stay in touch. Temporarily.
Blogs are not the only or the first system to not respect Palo Alto rules: for instance flash mobs are similar: “A flash mob is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, do something unusual for a brief period of time, and then quickly disperse. They are usually organized with the help of the Internet or other digital communications networks”, according to Wikipedia. (****)
Teenagers’ blogs or flash mobs are certainly not global; they are not local too, they are somewhere else. But they are more local than global… or more precisely non-global: there is no worldwide ambition in these new communication tools – just the possibility to express, react, share.
At the end of the 19th century our civilization moves from closed systems to open systems: people stood at the connection of different communities – some local, some national, some global. Our civilization moved from traditional villages to global villages – with “s”. But this evolution is only possible if open systems are stable – when they are systems: globalization needs stability.
Today in the 21st century, emerging trends are less and less stable communities – more temporary systems linked to opportunities. Teenagers are looking for more humanity – and humanity is local. Therefore globalization will mark time. Certainly “some globalization” is irreversible but it’s no more the major trend. Local networking and communication will lead society during this century.

Le Retour sur Investissement des actions marketing : une banale erreur !
La performance du marketing : de l’efficacité au retour sur investissement, tel sera le thème du prochain Atelier de Recherche Appliquée de l’Association Française du Marketing – et de la table ronde à laquelle je suis convié, avec d’autres annonceurs.
La question de la mesure du Retour sur Investissement des actions marketing en général et publicitaires en particulier apparaît totalement légitime… de prime abord – bien que compliquée et dangereuse – mais en réalité, totalement perverse et inutile !
Une question légitime… de prime abord
Quoi de plus normal pour celui qui investit temps et argent dans une entreprise que de souhaiter évaluer la rentabilité de sa mise de fond : car si le rendement se révèle inférieur à celui de la Caisse d’Epargne, mieux vaut attendre que la fortune vienne en dormant !
Les sciences sociales ont toujours été fascinées par les sciences « dures » où les mathématiques règnent en maîtres : mais si la course des étoiles dans le ciel répond à des lois établies – avec bien des difficultés – par Newton et Einstein, il n’en va pas de même pour le marketing ou la communication publicitaire. C’est pourquoi l’exercice ne peut se révéler que complexe et périlleux.
Complexe, car rien ne permet de valider la pertinence des constructions patiemment élaborées : jamais les prédictions issues de la modélisation ne se sont révélées exactes. En sciences sociales, jamais les mêmes causes ne produisent exactement les mêmes effets.
Périlleux, parce qu’à trop vouloir discerner des effets, on privilégie inéluctablement le court terme, donc la promotion à la publicité, les sorties de rayons à l’image de marque. Les financiers vous le diront toujours : « Arrêtez de communiquer un an ou deux, ça ne change pas grand-chose. Arrêtez les offres promotionnelles, et vous perdez des parts de marché ».
Il y a bien un jour où les promotions ne suffisent plus, au bout de deux à trois ans : mais là, il presque trop tard pour remonter la pente !
Une problématique perverse et inutile !
Imaginons cependant que la modélisation en sciences sociales en général, et en marketing plus précisément, fasse un immense bond en avant et que l’on puisse accéder à des certitudes dignes des sciences physiques – belle utopie ! On saura alors comment doser avec précision tous les moyens marketing pour en maximiser le rendement. Enfin, tous ceux sur lesquels on peut agir, car la concurrence restera toujours libre de ses propres choix !
Ce qui, intellectuellement parlant, ne serait pas si mal… dans une société relativement stable : car si le contexte change, tout tombe par terre, les précieux indices, savamment calculés, deviennent immédiatement caduques.
Je ne vais pas ici répéter ce que l’on trouvera plus argumenté dans d’autres notes de ce blog – ou dans mon dernier livre : mais nous changeons totalement de civilisation et les recettes issues du passé, si on les applique sans discernement, ne peuvent conduire qu’à de cinglants échecs. Or ce que nous proposent les adeptes du Retour sur Investissement, c’est précisément d’investir dans des outils sophistiqués et (donc) chers pour répliquer un passé… non répliquable.
Bref de dépenser beaucoup pour mettre au point des modèles illusoires qui ne serviront qu’à faire des erreurs !
Transformer les entrepreneurs en spéculateurs : voilà ce qu’ils prônent ; et surtout en des spéculateurs sans risques. Objectif totalement inatteignable dans un monde en mutations comme le nôtre : l’avenir appartient aux entreprises créatives – et non aux financiers !

How the medium affects the message
Media planning today is founded on communication models derived from that of Shannon and Weaver, i.e. models which prohibit our accounting for the influence of the actual medium on message perception. Thus, in print media, the evaluation of various magazines is made in terms of target readers, i.e. readers belonging to the relevant target group.
Without wishing to appropriate Mc Luhan's deliberately provocative formula of "the medium is the message", we simply wish to explain here why, when talking to the same population, the same message will be more, or less, effective according to the title in which it appears.
Because for one and the same product, and with an identical target audience, the impact of the same advertisement can plummet by almost 40 % according to the title which carries the advertisement. In other words, accounting for the medium's specific input influencing the efficacy of the message appears to be just as important (at least) as the breakdown of readers!
Problematic and methodology
When César Birotteau, Balzac's celebrated "perfumer merchant", decides to boast the virtues of his "twin sultana pastry" and "carminative water" to attract local customers, he has to make do with placards astutely located in what today we would call his "marketing zone".
Soon afterwards, Emile de Girardin opened his daily paper to advertising and so made "La Presse" the very first advertising medium(1). Articles and advertisements got along together without any real interference, and the successors to Birotteau bought nothing other than Girardin's readers, since his prose was of little significance.
From then onwards, media planning made do easily with the multiple communication theories derived from the Shannon and Weaver pattern, represented as follows :
Transmitter > Coding > Message > Decoding > Receiver
When conveying a message to the receiver, the transmitter and the receiver share a common code. So such a pattern implies perfect symmetry between the coding and decoding operations.
From a linguistic standpoint, this pattern appears to hold water. When telling B that "the door is open", A is assuming that B has the same code as he : a glossary and grammar, where "door" is defined as an "opening through which one enters or leaves an enclosed area", and appears to be the subject of a verb in the passive tense.
Now, if B's code glossary happened to be totally Shakespearian in nature, he would never understand A's message.
The problem with this sort of pattern is that "the door is open" will have a different meaning according to context. For example: "You can go away, the meeting is over", "Close it, it's cold in here", "Watch out, there might be a thief around" and many others for which this pattern will never make allowance, whatever the common code shared by A and B.
This is why a certain number of semioticians have recently replaced this pattern with more flexible or more complex notions such as that put forward by Grice, for whom the message has no real intrinsic significance. It is up to the receiver to infer the message from clues.
In "Relevance"(2), Dan Sperber and Deidre Wilson point out that "from Aristotle to modern semioticians, all theories of communication have been founded on one and the same model, which we will call the code model. Here, communicating is a question of coding and decoding messages. Recently, several philosophers, including Paul Grice and David Lewis, put forward a wholly different model which we will call the inferential model. In this instance, communicating is a question of producing and interpreting clues."
"Robert has bought le Figaro" can mean "Robert has bought a copy of le Figaro" or "Robert has bought the firm which publishes le Figaro".
Sperber and Wilson call attention to the ambiguity of such a phrase, while stating that "under ordinary circumstances, listeners would have no problem choosing one of these two meanings", namely the first.
But if the people conducting this conversation happened to belong to circles close to Robert Hersant, now owner of "the firm which publishes le Figaro", the second meaning would have been the right one.
In both cases, the people present have the same code, i.e. the English language. On the other hand, the context is not the same:
- in one case, here are two friends wondering about the results of a soccer match: "I don't know who won, but ask Robert, he has bought le Figaro";
- in the other, there are two friends who are in on the negotiations being conducted in secret by Robert Hersant to purchase the newspaper, and the better informed of the two tells his companion: "The deal's gone through. Robert has bought le Figaro".
Media planning, whose field of investigation is confined to the numeration alone of opportunities for the reader of a magazine to be exposed to an advertising campaign, will easily make do with the first pattern. However, taking into account the effect of the advertising message on the target group, or at least its proper comprehension, necessitates recourse to the notion of context.
There are numerous forms of advertising treatment which evoke MacLuhan and his provocative "The message is the medium". Thus, the Publicitor from Brochand and Lendrevie sells out to fashion, saying: "You cannot keep MacLuhan's theses quiet."
However, as soon as one reaches the concrete base of media-plan construction, there is not the slightest allusion to the medium or to the context, just your common or garden economies of scale, leverage, affinity and sempiternal GRPs.
Yet, can we really obtain the same perception of one and the same advertisement when this advertisement is inserted in magazines as far apart as "Prima" and "Elle", one a practical weekly full of cooking recipe cards, the other a fashion and beauty periodical full of women who certainly look nothing like housewives? And does the advertisement stay as effective?
Our intention here, is to analyze the influence exerted by different titles, within one and the same medium, on the perception of a given message.
To do so, we will proceed in three stages :
- Firstly, we shall show how an essentially semiological approach can isolate the specific features of each title, using women's magazines as our reference subject.
- We will then apply the same approach to advertising, after using creative groups to define advertising sensitivities and their appropriateness to each title under analysis.
- Lastly, we shall draw a number of conclusions as to the influence that different titles can exert on the perception of an advertising message. These conclusions will be given experimental validation.
1 – Isolate the specific features of each title
1.1 – Operational principles
There are two adjacent systems of communication in every woman's magazine: one is editorial, the other relates to advertising.
The originality of this construction is that if, as emphasized by Sperber and Wilson, "communicating is producing and interpreting clues", the clues available to any receiver of an advertisement come, among other contextual sources, from editorial content.
Every analysis of print advertisement communication necessarily implies an analysis of print communication itself.
We do not wish to record all the clues available to the receiver for inferring the significance of an advertisement, rather to examine the clues he or she can deduce from the editorial context of magazines.
For Umberto Eco(3), "a text, as it appears or occurs linguistically, represents a chain of expressive expedients which the receiver has to update".
Editorial communication, dovetailing linguistic and conventional content, has no effect whatsoever on this updating process. At most, it only complicates things.
The updating of expressive expedients, all part of Grice's system of inference, operates at four different levels:
Discursive structures, very close to the text in their linearity, and retaining the text's shifts in tense, digressions and other parentheses: unaware that the old man slain by Oedipus is his father, the spectator looks on with bated breath.
Narrative structures, which reallocate the speech into fundamental patterns and reestablish the time logic of actions. Now aware of the horror of patricide, the spectator realizes the tragedy of Oedipus, cursed by the gods.
Actancial structures, stripped of their individuality, where players exist only through their acts: Oedipus successively holds the role of patricide, triumphant hero and accursed hero, where his father is the instrument of his damnation.
Ideological structures, where the "action structures are vested with values of judgement and (where) roles convey axiological oppositions". Where the contemporary reader disapproves of patricide and the Freudian analyst detects some sort of complex, Sophocles will condemn the pride of the triumphant hero.
In the "Système de la Mode", Barthes in his analysis of "Elle" and "Jardin des Modes" mentions their phraseology which forms a "connotative message aimed at transmitting a certain vision of the world", phraseology which pursues the ideological structures of Eco. Our analysis will be confined to these ideological structures, conveying permanent values with which readers can be identified.
From one issue to another, the discursive, narrative and actancial structures have their roots in the contingency of issues under review. On the other hand, the underlying ideology at the fourth reading level is perennial, hence the magazine's obvious predictability.
This explains why the reader of a Christian faith magazine such as "La Vie" certainly does not expect to come across an article in favour of abortion, unlike the reader of a more contentious magazine such as Cosmopolitan.
This first stage, whose objective is to isolate the specific features of each medium, will unwind in synchronic and diachronic form:
- Approaching issues dealt with over the same period of time by several different magazines, synchronic analysis will strive to point out relevant systems of opposition.
- Diachronic analyses will only retain the sempiternal differences which consequently appear to be part of the ideology of the title in question.
1.2 – Example # 1: "La Grande Cabriole"
The Bicentennial of the French Revolution produced a considerable number of televised events.
The filming of a TV series entitled "La Grande Cabriole" provided "Femme d'Aujourd'hui" with the opportunity to run a feature article on Nina Campaneez, the director. On the other hand, "Marie-Claire" preferred to interview Fanny Ardant, the leading actress. The two women had not worked together in a television studio since the successful "Les Dames de la Côte" shot some ten years earlier.
Cosmopolitan also featured an interview with Fanny Ardant, but took care not to mention her return to television.
The portrait of Nina Campaneez in "Femme d'Aujourd'hui" was subtitled "The Family Comes First", while "Marie-Claire" quoted: "Madame Bovary was right: you have to be in love with love".
The choice of actress versus director was of little significance. However, the personalities portrayed by the two magazines - the "spirited and passionate actress" and the "faithful wife" director - came across as essentially discriminatory.
Both articles were built around these two personalities. One was a short, two page story for Femme d'Aujourd'hui, dotted with amusing anecdotes and accompanied by a brief rundown on the career of Nina Campaneez to avoid "losing" the reader.
Marie-Claire, though, featured a much longer and very direct article with provocative prompts from the journalist such as "that is incompatible with what you are saying" and without any real points of reference as to the artiste's career.
One pictured the smiling face of a very relaxed Nina Campaneez, the other portrayed a very stark photograph of Fanny Ardant : both these iconographical choices were working towards the same construction.
In Cosmopolitan, Fanny Ardant became the "woman out of step with her dreams" who has the "audacity to be ugly". The dominant photograph was a disturbing portrait of an actress with a fleeting look, a harsh shot with no soft decor or props.
Femme d'Aujourd'hui constructed a world dominated by an in depth need for family achievement, giving readers the image of a totally reassuring world to which they could easily relate, thereby perpetuating values of tradition, permanence and even transcendence.
Marie-Claire was addressing women who are so much more self assured with the ability to assume alone their individuality and sexuality in the face of others: the opinion and judgment of others are given overriding importance.
With Cosmopolitan, there was the additional role played by social status in the building of their ego, a need to attack and shock others.
All three titles in fact "built" their own reader, a woman likely to adhere to what they were saying, what Eco would describe as a "Model"(4). "This is why he (the author) will plan for a Model Reader able to cooperate with the textual updating in the way the author thought it should be done, and able to act in terms of interpretation the way he (the author) acted in generative terms".
1.3 – Example # 2: Horoscope
Every January, leading magazines publish their annual horoscopes: "astrology is in fashion", said "Biba" in justifying its decision and lambasting all those who continually pour scorn on horoscopes for the way they "classify individuals into twelve clearly defined categories".
Without questioning the merits of horoscopes ("I hope this article made you more difficult. When someone says to you 'I am Aries', don't classify him or her into one of twelve little boxes, just imagine nine planets crossing the zodiac to show you the many facets of a personality"), Biba gave horoscopes a new form of legitimacy, as did "Vital" with its Astroscope. "This horoscope is unlike any other. It will not label you with immuable destinies but will help you make the most of the year ahead".
In a word, while knocking the triviality of horoscopes, both Biba and Vital developed a sort of guide for their readers but took nothing away from the myth that still surrounds them.
Cosmopolitan announced a "Future Special": "The Revolutions of 1990. The scoops of 1989. The stars of the 1990s. Your horoscope for the whole year". The latter phrase stood out from the rest in sky blue.
The first surprise appeared in the table of contents, where it was clear that the horoscope was not part of the "Future Special" feature; it was included on page 110, devoid of any title or introduction, in a sort of long vertical tab on the right hand page: "Your horoscope for 1989". Selling out to fashion is one thing, but there are limits.
"Elle", in successfully bringing together two of the most prestigious names from the world of horoscopes, refuted the unicity and thereby the truthfulness of its zodiac predictions.
There was, in fact, the previously analyzed phenomenon of latching onto fashion, and the pretext here was nothing other than a fashion feature! Leo was a "Vuitton silk scarf or a gold plated snake necklace from Céline."
Even in selling out to the horoscope fashion, Elle and Cosmopolitan erased any predictability and thereby ignored the guide function developed by Biba or Vital.
1.4 – The world of women's magazines
These little comparisons allow us to locate the specific features of each magazine and to reconstruct the network of clues to which the reader will relate for her inference of advertisements.
Remember, the point of this document is to analyze the influence of different media on the perception of an advertising message. We have called these networks of clues Reading Moods. A publication's Reading Mood may also be defined, in dynamic terms, as the influence exerted by a title's editorial context on the perception of it advertising content.
Each title obviously has its own specific reading mood, although for didactic reasons moods affecting women's magazines may be pooled into four major families :
Rebellion: titles such as Cosmopolitan or Biba, with readers who are totally liberated and ready to assume or even provoke situations of conflict. They may even be prepared to shock others.
Highly sensitive to fashion, they continually mould their lives to the idea they have of themselves and, of course, to how others see them.
Responsibility: titles such as Marie-Claire or Elle, with very selfassured readers capable of assuming their individuality in the face of the world around them.
While they do not feel the same need to upset or shock as the previous group, their social status plays a fundamental role in the constitution of their ego.
Motherhood: titles such as Prima or Modes & Travaux, where readers find total achievement within the restricted world of the family cell.
They are upholders of values of permanence and cohesion, their children are their major concern, and education is approached in a highly traditional manner.
Wifehood: titles such as Intimité or Bonne Soirée, with readers continually in search of social, family and married couple stability.
In their private lives, they are very dependent, if not on their husbands, then at least on etiquette and rules inherited from tradition. They are not very sensitive to fashion but behave as followers.
The four reading moods of Rebellion, Responsibility, Motherhood and Wifehood are split along an Introversion and Extraversion axis, as illustrated on our map(5):
Extraversion combines the Rebellion and Responsibility moods with titles referring their readers to the image of women who attach prime importance to their social status and of course how they are viewed by others.
Introversion combines the Wifehood and Motherhood moods with titles referring readers to the image of housewives who are more concerned with their homes than with being attractive.
A second axis opposes a pole of Proximity, covering titles with a guide function, similar to what we saw with Biba and Vital, and a pole of Distance, which ignores this function.
2 – Reading moods and advertising
The second stage consists in applying the same semiotic approach to a body of advertisements after defining sensitivities and their appropriateness to the titles under analysis by organizing creative groups.
During these creative groups, we asked participants, all of whom were readers of women's magazines, to:
- organize the titles presented to them according to the affinity they considered to exist between each one. The outlines thus produced proved to be very close to those on our own map;
- locate a number of advertisements on the pattern they had created according to appropriateness with titles presented.
Each advertisement was a complete discursive manifesto, fully updateable on all four levels as defined by Umberto Eco. Thus, at actancial level, the American Express advertisement was interpreted as a story with three actors: a hero, the young man in the foreground, the woman, whom the man is seeking to win, and alongside him, the waiter, absent but obviously necessary to understand the message properly.
Successful in the way he pays (the American Express is accepted by the waiter), the hero unveils himself in the eyes of the woman he is out to win; he becomes "client hors du commun" (a customer with a difference).
At this level of analysis, the message can but function, i.e. secure a positive inference in the mind of the (woman) reader. However, the same reader may, or may not, accept the money values superimposed on this successful story at the fourth and last level, i.e. ideology.
The Radiola advertisement is receptive to the same sort of analysis; however, the values underlying its comprehension at the deepest levels differ completely. The advertisement presents two actors: the washing machine in the role of the hero, and a user, visible only via her arm.
The hero is identified as such by the user because it provides a tangible answer to a question of capabilities in terms of silence: the advertising benefit shifts from ostentation to privacy.
Opposite Radiola, the Miele advertisement refers to an ostentatious benefit shifting it closer to Extraversion. This proves that the comprehension of an advertisement at the final level is in no way dependent on the product presented. It also proves that the appropriateness between an advertisement and a publication is not linked to the product presented but to the values on which it is based.
The Extraversion pole is always surrounded by advertisements in which the views of other people weigh very heavily through values of simple ostentation, like American Express, and through a clearly stated commitment to provocation, as Kookaï.
Closer to the Introversion pole we find advertisements built around clearly utilitarian and private values and tied to product functionality, such as Radiola, or permanence and tradition, such as Groupama.
As for the vertical axis, the Distance pole confronts object related advertisements, centred on the product, with the Proximity pole and advertisements that are more subjective and centred on the consumer.
3 – Reading moods and advertising efficacy
3.1 – The influence of the Reading Mood
Our intention is to deal with the advertising message and more particularly with the influence several different vehicles may exert on its perception within one and the same medium: for instance women's magazines.
We have seen that the reader of an advertisement did not decode it mechanically using a process symmetrical to the way it was coded by the transmitter. On the contrary, the meaning is inferred from the sum of clues at his or her disposal.
These clues stem equally from the actual message and from the communicational context taken as a whole, including therefore the editorial content of magazines.
Hence a first stage during which we attempted to locate a system of relevant semiotic oppositions between titles, each title being identifiable as a contextual source or a reservoir of clues from which the reader has to draw in order to infer the meaning of an advertisement.
We have called this editorial context or reservoir of clues - specific to each title - the Reading Mood.
We also saw that, while there is a special reading mood to match each particular title:
- Each title is also matched by a number of specific advertising needs,
- And the values which help differentiate advertising messages appear to be very close to the values differentiating the titles.
From this, we can deduce:
- At the very least, a powerful convergence between editorial and advertising dichotomies, with a substantial overlap of the values making up both worlds.
- And much more so, a strong influence of editorial context on advertising concept.
Indeed, the reader expects the clues conveyed by the actual advertising message to coincide with those conveyed by the message's context, hence the powerful convergence between editorial and advertising dichotomies.
Thus, the American Express advertisement, where the views of other people weigh heavily through values of ostentation, will fit much better into a title such as Elle or Madame Figaro, where the reader's social status plays a fundamental role in the constitution of one's ego.
Thus, the Groupama advertisement, built around more private values tied to product permanence, will certainly be expected in titles such as Modes & Travaux and Prima, which convey the same values.
This kind of convergence between editorial and advertising dichotomies spawns a high rate of advertising predictability for every Reading Mood. In other words, an advertisement already has a certain significance from the very fact that it happens to be inserted in such and such a magazine, independently of real content.
From this advertising predictability tied to Reading Moods, we may consider four different situations:
An advertisement poor in significance, where the product is merely presented with no commentary or marked rhetorical effects, according to what Georges Péninou(6) describes as the "exposure pattern": "In the absence of phrases, exposure thus corresponds to degree zero of object illustration: a simple tribute to its being there, an imitative reproduction of its shape, conformity between presentation, representation and image".
To infer the significance of this form of advertisement, the reader will draw clues essentially from its context: comprehension will be formed primarily with the help of its Reading Mood.
An advertisement rich in significance or over-significance, inserted in a title with a "relatively" neutral Reading Mood. Here, the items inherent in the message will have the upper hand over the items composing the Reading Mood.
As we have seen, there is of course no true Reading Mood that can be described as really neutral. However, a very rich advertisement will come across as less disturbed by the Reading Mood of the most centrally located titles on each map, halfway between Extraversion and Introversion, such as Marie-France, or halfway between Individualism and Solidarity, such as Le Figaro Magazine.
A divergent advertisement, where advertising values repudiate the values tied to the Reading Mood. Certainly, the message's inherent significance will logically override contextual clues, but the risk of narcosis is high.
Indeed, the time the reader spends comprehending advertising is very short. In the event of blatant contradiction between his or her expectations and the predictability tied to the Reading Mood and the reality of the message itself, the message will lose its intelligibility, be put on the back burner and fail to be memorized: it will suffer from an effect of narcosis.
"If an intelligible event arises, it surprises. Then, either the mental system attempts to change and assimilate the event, or it numbs, chokes and finally rejects the event. There is therefore a selection process, the counter effect of which is rejection, leading to obliteration, i.e. oblivion",(7) remarks Edgar Morin.
A convergent advertisement, where editorial and advertising values converge perfectly: this is the ideal situation, where the Reading Mood reinforces the significance of the advertisement.
Thus, l'Express refers us to the image of individuals who are particularly sensitive to how others view them, just like the American Express or Rover advertisements. Modes & Travaux refers to the image of women who prefer tradition and naturalness, attracted by products such as Herta or Yves Rocher.
3.2 – Experimental Validation
Depending on the Reading Mood of the magazine in which it features, one and the same advertisement will logically see its advertising efficacy increase or decrease.
We shall now try and validate this result through observation: from the very many evaluation criteria available, we have selected impact through recognition score.
Why impact and not approval or change in image? Simply because this is the most commonly used criteria. However, the same exercise may be made using criteria of image, purchase inducement, etc...
For this last stage to be successful, we used twenty advertising posttests conducted independently from our own research by the Démoscopie Institute. These tests were targeted twice over in order to select only:
- Interviewees perfectly appropriate to the advertising target audience,
- Interviewees having had the opportunity to be exposed at least once to the media plan: hence a second filter relating to reading habits.
The interviewees who were questioned necessarily belong to the target audience of one or more titles in the media plan. The recognition score specific to each title was deduced by cross referencing recognition scores and reading habits.
Of the twenty posttests analyzed, all gave concordant results. The two I shall be presenting concern firstly an advertisement for up market beauty products from Jeanne Gatineau, appearing in Modes & Travaux, Marie-Claire, Elle, Madame Figaro and Cosmopolitan.
The second is an advertisement for a brand of domestic appliances, Radiola, published in Modes & Travaux, Prima, Actuelle and Elle.
The Gatineau advertisement, highly elitist, transforms the product, presented majestically as a sign of social recognition. Women who buy this brand of beauty product primarily gain satisfaction from the way they are viewed by others, hence a Reading Mood combining Extraversion and Distance.
Bear in mind that the mood of the previously analyzed advertisement for Radiola was distinctly Introvert.
The recognition score for Jeanne Gatineau ranged from 53.4 % to 33.3 %, from Cosmopolitan to Modes & Travaux. The Radiola ad scored from 38 % to 28.4 % from Modes & Travaux to Elle. In both cases, these scores perfectly matched the preceding analyses.
In other words, the efficacy of an advertisement depends very tightly on the Reading Mood of the title in which it is published.

L'incidence du médium sur le message
Cet exposé a pour objet de montrer comment la prise en compte des développements les plus récents d'une discipline aussi qualitative que la sémiologie, risque de modifier profondément les habitudes d'une discipline aussi quantitative que le média-planning.
Aujourd'hui, le média-planning se fonde sur des modèles de communication dérivés de celui de Shannon et Weaver, modèles ne permettant pas la prise en compte l'influence du médium lui-même sur la perception du message : ainsi en presse, l'évaluation des divers magazines s'effectue en termes de lecteurs utiles, c'est-à-dire appartenant à la cible visée.
Sans vouloir faire nôtre la formule volontairement provocante de Mc Luhan, "le message, c'est le médium", nous voulons ici simplement expliquer pourquoi, pour une même population, un même message n'aura pas la même efficacité selon qu'il s'insère dans un titre ou dans un autre.
Car pour un même produit, et sur une même cible, l'impact d'une même annonce peut chuter de près de 40%, selon le titre où s'insère cette annonce : en d'autres termes, la prise en compte de l'apport spécifique du médium sur l'efficacité du message apparaît tout aussi importante (au minimum), que le seul décompte de ses lecteurs, fussent-ils des lecteurs utiles!
Problématique et méthodologie
Quand César Birotteau, l'illustre "marchand parfumeur" de Balzac, décide de vanter auprès des clients de son quartier les vertus de sa "Double Pâte des sultanes" et de son "Eau carminative", il lui faut se contenter de quelques placards judicieusement répartis au sein de ce qu'aujourd'hui, nous nommerions sa zone de chalandise.
Mais bientôt, Emile de Girardin ouvrira les colonnes de son quotidien La Presse à la réclame, et en fera le premier support publicitaire(1).
Articles et réclames coexistent, sans réelle interférence : les successeurs de Birotteau n'achèteront jamais à Girardin que ses lecteurs, sa prose lui importe peu.
Dès lors, le média-planning se suffira aisément des multiples théories de la communication dérivées du schéma de Shannon et Weaver, qui peut ainsi se représenter :
Pour transmettre un message à son destinataire, l'émetteur dispose, en commun avec ce dernier, d'un code. Un tel schéma présuppose parfaitement symétriques, les opérations de codage et de décodage.
Linguistiquement, ce schéma paraît compétent : en disant à B : "La porte est ouverte", A fait l'hypothèse que ce dernier possède le même code que lui, code composé d'un lexique où "porte" se définit par "ouverture permettant d'accéder à un lieu fermé et d'en sortir", et d'une grammaire, où "porte" apparaît comme étant le sujet d'un verbe conjugué à la voie passive.
Si le code de B ne possède pour tout lexique que celui de Shakespeare, jamais il ne comprendra le message de A. Le problème d'un tel schéma est que, selon le cas, "La porte est ouverte" signifiera : "Vous pouvez partir, l'entretien est fini", "Fermez donc cette porte, il fait froid", "Attention, il y a peut-être un voleur", et bien d'autres choses encore dont, tout code commun à A et à B qui soit, jamais ce schéma n'en rendra compte.
C'est pourquoi, plusieurs sémioticiens lui en substituent de plus souples, et plus complexes, comme Grice pour qui le message ne possède pas de réelle signification intrinsèque : c'est au récepteur de l'inférer à partir d'indices.
Dans La Pertinence(2), Dan Sperber et Deidre Wilson précisent : "D'Aristote aux sémioticiens modernes, toutes les théories de la communication ont été fondées sur un seul et même modèle, que nous appellerons le modèle du code. Selon ce modèle, communiquer, c'est coder et décoder des messages. Récemment, plusieurs philosophes, dont Paul Grice et David Lewis, ont proposé un modèle tout à fait différent, que nous appellerons le modèle inférentiel. Selon le modèle inférentiel, communiquer, c'est produire et interpréter des indices".
"Robert a acheté le Figaro" peut tant signifier : "Robert a acheté un exemplaire du Figaro", que : "Robert a acheté l'entreprise qui publie le Figaro".
Sperber et Wilson relèvent l'ambiguïté d'une telle phrase, tout en constatant que "dans des circonstances ordinaires, les auditeurs n'ont aucun mal à choisir l'un de ces deux sens", à savoir le premier .Mais que nos interlocuteurs ait appartenu au proche entourage de Robert Hersant, devenu depuis propriétaire de "l'entreprise qui publie le Figaro", et c'est le second sens qui s'impose.
Dans les deux cas, les interlocuteurs en présence disposent du même code, à savoir la langue française. Par contre, le contexte n'est plus le même :
- dans un cas, voici deux amis qui s'interrogent sur les résultats de la dernière étape du Tour de France : "Je ne sais pas qui est maillot jaune, mais demande donc à Robert, il a acheté le Figaro".
- dans l'autre, voilà deux amis, au courant des négociations que mène secrètement Robert Hersant en vue du rachat d'un quotidien, et le mieux informé tient son interlocuteur au courant : "Ca y est enfin, Robert a acheté le Figaro".
De ce contexte, chaque destinataire tire les indices nécessaires à une bonne interprétation du message final : et sans de tels indices, pas de réelle communication.
Un média-planning dont le champ d'investigation se limiterait au seul dénombrement des occasions que tout lecteur de la presse magazine a d'être exposé à une campagne publicitaire, se suffirait aisément du schéma initial.
Par contre, la prise en compte de l'effet du message publicitaire sur la cible, ou pour le moins, de sa bonne intellection, nécessite de recourir à la notion de contexte.
Nombreux sont les traités publicitaires évoquant Mac Luhan et son provocant "Le message, c'est le média" : ainsi le Publicitor de Brochand et Lendrevie sacrifie-t-il à la mode : "Les thèses de Mac Luhan : On ne peut pas les passer sous silence".
Mais dès que s'aborde le concret de la construction des plans médias, plus la moindre allusion au support, à son contexte, que de banales échelles d'économies, puissance et affinité, et un sempiternel GRP.
Pourtant une même annonce, insérée dans des titres aussi différents qu'un hebdomadaire pratique, comme Prima, avec fiches de cuisine et un magazine de mode, de beauté, comme Elle, plein de photos de femmes qui ressemblent à tout ... sauf à des ménagères, peut-elle être pareillement perçue?
Ou demeurer aussi efficace?
Notre propos est d'analyser l'influence qu'au sein d'un même média, des supports différents peuvent exercer sur la perception d'un message
Pour ce faire, nous procéderons en trois étapes :
- tout d'abord, nous montrerons comment une démarche d'essence sémiologique permet d'isoler les spécificités propres à chaque support, sur l'univers de référence de la presse féminine
- ensuite nous appliquerons la même démarche à la publicité après avoir défini, lors de groupes créatifs, les sensibilités publicitaires en adéquation avec chacun des titres analysés.
- enfin, nous en tirerons un certain nombre de conclusions sur l'influence que différents supports peuvent exercer sur la perception d'un message publicitaire, conclusions que nous validerons expérimentalement.
1 – Isoler les spécificités propres a chaque support
1.1 – Principes opérationnels
En tout magazine féminin, coexistent deux procès communicationnels, l'un éditorial, l'autre publicitaire.
L'originalité de la construction réside en ce que si, comme le soulignent Sperber et Wilson, "communiquer, c'est produire et interpréter des indices", les indices dont dispose tout récepteur d'une annonce proviennent, entre autres sources contextuelles, du contenu éditorial.
Toute analyse de la communication publicitaire presse, présuppose nécessairement une analyse de la communication presse elle-même.
Notre propos n'est pas de recenser l'intégralité des indices dont dispose le récepteur d'une annonce pour en inférer la signification, mais d'examiner ceux qu'il peut tirer du contexte éditorial des magazines.
Pour Umberto Eco(3), "un texte, tel qu'il apparaît dans sa surface (ou manifestation) linguistique, représente une chaîne d'artifices expressifs qui doivent être actualisés par le destinataire."
Que la communication éditoriale conjugue contenus linguistique et iconique, ne modifie en rien le principe de l'actualisation, tout au plus, le complique-t-il.
Cette actualisation d'artifices expressifs, qui participe de l'inférence de Grice, s'effectue à quatre niveaux :
Celui des structures discursives, très proche du texte dans sa linéarité, dont il conserve décalages temporels, digressions et autres parenthèses : ignorant que le vieillard assassiné par Oedipe est son père Laïos, le spectateur demeure en haleine.
Celui des structures narratives redistribue le discours en schémas fondamentaux, rétablit la logique temporelle des opérations : désormais convaincu de l'horreur du parricide, le spectateur accède au tragique d'un Oedipe maudit par les dieux.
Celui des structures actancielles, où dépouillés de leur individualité, les acteurs n'existent qu'au travers de leurs actes : Oedipe occupe successivement les rôles de parricide, de héros triomphant, puis de héros maudit, et Laïos devient l'instrument de cette malédiction.
Celui des structures idéologiques, où la "charpente actancielle est investie de jugements de valeurs et (où) les rôles véhiculent des oppositions axiologiques" : là où le lecteur contemporain réprouvera le parricide, et l'analyste freudien diagnostiquera quelque complexe, Sophocle condamnait l'ubricité du héros triomphant.
Dans le Système de la Mode, dépouillant Elle et le Jardin des Modes, Barthes évoque la "phraséologie du journal (qui) constitue un message connotant, destiné à transmettre une certaine vison du monde", phraséologie qui procède des structures idéologiques d'Eco.
Et c'est également à elle que s'attachera notre analyse, parce véhiculant des valeurs permanentes propres à identifier le lecteur.
En effet, d'un numéro à l'autre, les structures discursives, narratives et actancielles, s'enracinent dans la contingence des sujets abordés. Par contre, l'idéologie sous-jacente au quatrième niveau de lecture, elle, perdure, d'où la forte prévisibilité des magazines.
C'est pourquoi la lectrice d'un magazine chrétien comme la Vie, ne s'attend certainement pas à y lire une prise de position favorable à l'avortement, celle d'un titre nettement contestataire comme Cosmopolitan, si.
Cette première étape, qui se fixe pour objectif, d'isoler les spécificités propres à chaque support, s'effectuera tant en synchronie qu'en diachronie :
- l'analyse synchronique s'attachera, à partir de sujets abordés sur une même période par plusieurs titres, à dégager des systèmes d'oppositions pertinents.
- l'analyse diachronique ne conservera de ces différences, que celles qui perdurent et donc apparaissent constitutives de l'idéologie des titres.
1.2 – Premier exemple : La grande cabriole
Le Bicentenaire de la Révolution Française fut prétexte à multiples événements télévisuels.
Le tournage d'un feuilleton intitulé "La grande cabriole" fournit à Femme d'Aujourd'hui, l'occasion d'un portrait de Nina Campaneez, la réalisatrice, et à Marie-Claire, celui d'une interview de Fanny Ardant, l'actrice principale : dix ans après "Les dames de la côte", le petit écran réunissaient à nouveau les deux femmes.
Cosmopolitan s'offrit également le plaisir d'une rencontre avec Fanny Ardant, mais en se gardant bien d'évoquer son retour à la télévision.
Femme d'Aujourd'hui sous-titre son portrait de Nina Campaneez, d'un "La famille d'abord", et Marie-Claire, son interview de Fanny Ardant, d'une citation : "Madame Bovary avait raison : il faut être amoureuse de l'amour".
L'entrée choisie, l'actrice versus la réalisatrice, importe peu. Par contre, les personnalités révélées par les deux magazines, l'actrice "fougueuse et passionnée" versus la réalisatrice "femme fidèle" apparaissent essentiellement discriminantes.
C'est autour des ces deux personnalités que se construisent les deux articles. Un court récit de deux pages, émaillé d'anecdotes sympathiques pour Femme d'Aujourd'hui, et accompagné d'un bref résumé de la carrière de Nina Campaneez, pour éviter de perdre le lecteur.
Un interview nettement plus long, et surtout très direct pour Marie-Claire, que la journaliste n'hésite pas à relancer d'impertinents : "C'est incompatible avec ce que vous dites", et sans réels points de repères sur la carrière de l'artiste.
Pour l'un, le visage souriant d'une Nina Campaneez particulièrement détendue, pour l'autre, un dessin très dur de Fanny Ardant : les choix iconographiques concourent à la même construction.
Avec Cosmopolitan, Fanny Ardant devient "La femme à côté de ses rêves", qui a "l'audace d'être moche". Et si ici la photo reprend ses droits, c'est celle inquiète d'une actrice au regard fuyant, une photo très brutale, parce que détourée, sans décors.
Femme d'Aujourd'hui construit un monde dominé par un profond besoin d'accomplissement familial, renvoie à sa lectrice, l'image de l'univers le plus rassurant, au sein duquel elle pourra se fondre; y perdurent des valeurs de tradition, de permanence, voire de transcendance.
Marie-Claire s'adresse à des femmes nettement plus sûres d'elles-mêmes, capables d'assumer seules, leur individualité, et leur sexualité, face aux autres; le regard d'autrui, les jugements qu'il véhicule, deviennent prépondérants.
Avec Cosmopolitan, s'ajoute au rôle fondamental joué par leur statut social dans la constitution de leur ego, un besoin d'agresser, de choquer.
Les trois titres construisent en fait leur propre lectrice, lectrice susceptible d'agréer à leur discours, qu'Eco qualifierait de "Modèle"(4) : "C'est pourquoi il (l'auteur) prévoira un Lecteur Modèle capable de coopérer avec l'actualisation textuelle de façon dont lui, l'auteur, le pensait et capable d'agir interprétativement comme lui a agi générativement".
1.3 – Second exemple : l'horoscope
En Janvier, les principaux magazines publient leur horoscope annuel : "L'astrologie est à la mode", se justifie Biba. Et d'en profiter pour fustiger ceux qui la dénature continuellement en classifiant "les individus en douze petites catégories bien définies".
Sans pour autant, en remettre en cause le bien-fondé : "J'espère que cet article vous aura rendues difficiles. Et lorsque que quelqu'un vous dira "je suis un Bélier", au lieu de le cataloguer dans une des douze petites boîtes, vous vous prendrez à imaginer neuf planètes traversant le zodiaque pour vous montrer les multiples facettes d'une personnalité".
Biba réinvestit l'horoscope d'une nouvelle légitimité, tout comme Vital grâce à son Astroscope : "Cet horoscope n'est pas comme les autres. Il ne vous ligote pas dans des destins figés, mais au contraire vous permet d'exploiter au mieux toute votre année".
Bref, tout en dénigrant le trivial horoscope, Biba et Vital, ne démythifient en aucun cas l'horoscope en soi, mais développent une fonction de guide en direction de leurs lectrices.
Cosmopolitan annonce un "Spécial Futur" : "Les révolutions de 90. Les scoops de 89. Les stars des nineties. Votre horoscope de toute l'année", ce dernier titre se dégageant de l'ensemble en bleu ciel.
Première surprise au sommaire : cet horoscope ne fait pas partie du dossier "Spécial Futur"; et page 110, pas de titre, pas d'introduction, juste sur la page de droite, une sorte de long onglet vertical : "Votre horoscope 1989". D'accord pour sacrifier à "la mode", mais a minima!
Elle, en faisant cohabiter deux des signatures les plus prestigieuses de la profession, Francesco Waldner et Yaguel Didier, nie l'unicité, et par la même la véracité, de l'horoscope.
En fait, s'il y a bien récupération du phénomène de mode précédemment analysé, mais comme prétexte… à une rubrique de mode! Le Lion se voit proposer "Carré de soie Vuitton", "Collier serpent en métal doré de Céline".
Même sacrifiant à la mode de l'horoscope, Elle, Cosmopolitan en gomment toute prédictivité, et par là-même, ne remplissant pas la fonction de guide développée par Biba ou Vital.
1.4 – L'univers de la presse féminine
De tels jeux d'oppositions permettent de dégager les spécificités propres à chaque titre, et de reconstruire les
réseaux indiciels auxquels recourra le lecteur pour inférer la signification des annonces publicitaires.
Car rappelons que l'objet de cette étude est bien d'analyser l'influence que différents supports peuvent exercer sur la perception d'un message publicitaires.
Ces réseaux indiciels, nous les nommerons Climats de Lecture. Le Climat de Lecture d'un titre se définira également, de façon dynamique, comme l'influence exercée par le contexte éditorial de ce titre, sur la perception de la publicité qui y est insérée.
Chaque titre possède évidemment un Climat de Lecture spécifique, même si, didactiquement, ceux-ci peuvent, pour la presse féminine, se regrouper en 4 grandes familles :
Les Rebelles, comme Cosmopolitan, ou Biba, avec une lectrice totalement libérée, prête à assumer, voire provoquer, toutes situations conflictuelles, quitte à choquer. D'un extrême sensibilité aux modes, cette lectrice adapte sans cesse sa vie à l'idée qu'elle se fait d'elle-même, et évidemment, au regard d'autrui.
Les Responsables, comme Marie-Claire, ou Elle, avec une lectrice très sûre d'elle-même, capable d'assumer son individualité face au monde environnant. Si elle n'éprouve plus le même besoin de choquer que la précédente, son statut social joue toujours un rôle fondamental dans la constitution de son ego.
Les Mères, comme Prima, ou Modes et Travaux, où avec une lectrice qui trouve son total accomplissement au sein de l'univers restreint de la cellule familiale. Garants de valeurs de permanence, de cohésion, les enfants occupent désormais une place prépondérante dans ses préoccupations; leur éducation s'appréhende de manière très traditionnelle.
Les Epouses, comme Intimité, ou Bonne Soirée, avec une lectrice en permanente quête de stabilité, stabilité sociale, familiale, stabilité de couple également. Dans son intimité, elle se montre très dépendante, sinon de son mari, du moins des convenances et des règles héritées de la tradition. Peu sensible aux modes, elle opte en revanche pour des comportements très suiveurs.
Rebelles, Responsables, Mères et Epouses, ces divers Climats de Lecture se répartissent, comme le visualise la carte(5), le long d'un axe Introversion-Extraversion :
L'Extraversion réunissant, avec les Rebelles et les Responsables, des titres renvoyant de leurs lectrices, l'image de femmes pour qui compte avant tout leur position sociale, et bien évidemment le regard d'autrui.
L'Introversion réunissant, avec les Epouses et les Mères, des titres en renvoyant l'image de ménagères, plus soucieuses de leur foyer que de séduction.
Un second axe oppose vers un pôle de Proximité, des titres remplissant une fonction de guide, semblable à celle que nous avons entrevue avec Biba, Vital, à d'autres, vers un pôle de Distanciation, ne la remplissant pas.
2 – Climats de lecture et publicité
La seconde étape consiste à appliquer la même démarche sémiotique à un corpus d'annonces publicitaires, après avoir défini, lors de groupes créatifs, les sensibilités en adéquation avec chacun des titres analysés.
Lors des divers groupes créatifs que nos recherches nous ont conduit à organiser, nous avons demandé aux participantes, toutes lectrices de magazines féminins :
- d'organiser sur un plan de travail, les titres que nous leur présentions, selon l'affinité qu'elles estimaient existante entre eux. Les constructions ainsi réalisées se révélèrent très proches de notre propre carte.
- de placer sur l'univers ainsi constitué un certain nombre d'annonces, selon le, ou les, titres qu'elles jugeaient présenter la meilleure adéquation.
Chaque annonce se présente comme une manifeste discursif complet, pleinement actualisable sur les quatre niveaux définis par Umberto Eco. Ainsi l'annonce American Express s'interprétera-t-elle parfaitement, au niveau des structures actancielles, comme une histoire à trois acteurs : un héros, le jeune homme au premier plan, la femme, objet de sa conquête, à ses côtés, et le garçon, absent, mais évidemment nécessaire à la bonne intellection du message.
De la réussite de l'épreuve du paiement (la carte American Express est acceptée par le garçon), le héros se révèle aux yeux de la femme qu'il cherche à conquérir : il devient un "client hors du commun".
A ce niveau de l'analyse, le message ne peut que fonctionner, c'est-à-dire aboutir à une heureuse inférence par le lecteur ou, plus précisément ici, la lectrice. Par contre, cette dernière peut, ou non, agréer aux valeurs d'argent qui se superposent à cette successful story au niveau dernier, le niveau idéologique.
L'annonce Radiola supporte le même type d'analyse; par contre les valeurs qui sous-tendent son intellection au niveau le plus profond diffèrent complètement. Cette annonce met en scène deux acteurs : le lave-linge dans le rôle du héros, et une utilisatrice, dont on n'aperçoit que le bras.
Le héros est identifié en tant que tel par l'utilisatrice parce qu'apportant une réponse tangible à une interrogation sur ses aptitudes au silence : d'ostentatoire, le bénéfice publicitaire devient privatif.
En regard, l'annonce Miele renvoie à un bénéfice ostentatoire, qui la rapproche de l'Extraversion : preuve que l'intellection d'une annonce à son niveau ultime ne dépend en rien du produit présenté.
Et preuve également que l'adéquation d'une annonce à un support n'est pas non plus liée au produit présenté, mais aux valeurs qui la fondent.
Vers l'Extraversion, se rencontreront toujours des annonces où pèse énormément le regard d'autrui, tant au travers de valeurs simplement ostentatoires, comme American Express, Miele, que d'une volonté provocatrice clairement affirmée, comme Kookaï.
Vers l'Introversion, les annonces se construisent autour de valeurs nettement utilitaires, et privatives, liées à la fonctionnalité du produit, comme Radiola, ou à sa permanence, à sa tradition, comme Groupama.
Quant à l'axe vertical, il opposera vers le pôle de Distanciation, des annonces généralement objectales, centrées sur le produit, versus vers le pôle de Proximité, des annonces plus subjectives, centrées sur le consommateur.
3 – Climats de lecture et efficacité publicitaire
3.1 – Influence du Climat de Lecture
Notre propos était de traiter du message publicitaire, et plus particulièrement de l'influence qu'au sein d'un même média, comme la presse magazine féminine, différents supports peuvent exercer sur sa perception.
Nous avons vu que le lecteur d'une annonce ne la décodait pas mécaniquement, selon un processus symétrique à celui de l'encodage par l'émetteur. Au contraire, il en infère la signification à partir de la somme des indices dont il dispose.
Indices provenant, tant du message lui-même, que de son contexte communicationnel pris dans son ensemble, et donc, entre autres sources contextuelles, du contenu éditorial des magazines.
D'où une première étape au cours de laquelle nous nous sommes attachés à dégager un système d'oppositions sémiotiques pertinentes entre supports, chaque support pouvant s'identifier comme une source contextuelle, un réservoir d'indices, au sein duquel puise le lecteur pour en inférer la signification d'une annonce.
Ce contexte rédactionnel, ce réservoir d'indices, spécifique à chaque titre, nous avons convenu de l'appeler le Climat de Lecture.
Nous avons également vu que si à chaque titre correspondait un Climat de Lecture particulier :
- à chaque titre correspondent également un certain nombre d'attentes publicitaires spécifiques,
- et que les valeurs qui concourent à discriminer les messages publicitaires, apparaissent très proches de celles qui concourent à discriminer les supports eux-mêmes.
Nous pouvons en déduire :
- a minima, à une forte convergence entre dichotomies éditoriales et publicitaires, les valeurs structurant les deux univers se recoupant très étroitement.
- et a fortiori, à un forte influence du contexte éditorial sur la perception publicitaire.
En effet, le lecteur s'attend à ce que les indices véhiculées par le message publicitaire lui-même, coïncident avec ceux véhiculées par le contexte de ce message, d'où la forte convergence entre dichotomies éditoriales et publicitaires.
Ainsi, l'annonce American Express où, au travers de valeurs ostentatoires, pèse énormément le regard d'autrui, s'intégrera mieux dans des titres comme Elle, Madame Figaro, où le statut social de la lectrice joue un rôle fondamental dans la constitution de son ego.
Ainsi, l'annonce Groupama construite autour de valeurs plus privatives, liées à la permanence du produit, sera-t-elle plus certainement attendue au sein de titres comme Modes et Travaux et Prima, qui véhiculent les mêmes valeurs.
D'une telle convergence entre dichotomies éditoriales et publicitaires, découle, pour tout Climat de Lecture, une forte prévisibilité publicitaire : en d'autres termes, de par sa seule situation au sein de tel ou tel titre, et indépendamment de son contenu réel, une annonce possède déjà une certaine signification.
En raison de cette prévisibilité publicitaire liée aux Climats de Lecture, quatre cas sont à envisager.
Celui de l'annonce significativement pauvre, où le produit apparaît simplement présenté, sans commentaires, ni effets rhétoriques marqués, selon ce que Georges Péninou(6) appelait le "régime de l'exposition" :
"L'exposition correspond, ainsi, à l'absence de phrasé, au degré zéro de la manifestation de l'objet : simple témoignage de son être-là, reproduction imitative de ses formes, conformité, en sa présentation, de sa représentation et de son image".
Pour inférer la signification d'une telle annonce, le lecteur puisera essentiellement au sein de son contexte : son intellection s'effectuera donc principalement à l'aide de son Climat de Lecture.
Celui, inverse, de l'annonce significativement riche, ou sur signifiante, insérée dans un titre au Climat de Lecture "relativement" neutre : ici les éléments inhérents au message l'emporteront sur ceux constitutifs du Climat de Lecture.
Certes, nous l'avons vu, il n'existe pas de Climat de Lecture "réellement" neutre; cependant, une annonce très riche apparaîtra moins perturbée par le Climat de Lecture des titres les plus médians sur chacune des cartes, à mi-chemin entre Extraversion et Introversion, comme Marie-France, ou Individualisme et Solidarité, comme le Figaro Magazine.
Celui de l'annonce divergente, où les valeurs publicitaires nient celles liées au Climat de Lecture : certes, la significativité interne au message prévaut logiquement les indices contextuels; mais le risque de narcose est grand. En effet, le temps consacré par le lecteur à l'intellection de la publicité est très faible; en cas de contradiction flagrante entre ses attentes et la prévisibilité liée au Climat de Lecture, et la réalité du message lui-même, ce dernier perdra son intelligibilité, sera mis entre parenthèses, et non mémorisé : il subira un effet de narcose :
"Si un événement inintelligible survient, il stupéfie. Alors, ou bien le système mental s'efforce de se modifier pour l'intégrer, ou bien il anesthésie, étouffe et finalement rejette l'événement. Il y a donc un processus de sélection, lequel a pour contrepartie la réjection, qui aboutit à l'effacement, c'est-à-dire l'oubli"(7), commente Edgar Morin.
Celui de l'annonce convergente, où valeurs éditoriales et publicitaires coïncident parfaitement : cas idéal, le Climat de Lecture renforçant la signification de l'annonce. Ainsi l'Express nous renvoie l'image d'individus particulièrement sensibles au regard d'autrui, tout comme les annonces American Express ou Rover; Modes et Travaux, celle de femmes préférant la tradition, le naturel, que séduiront Herta ou Yves Rocher.
3.2 – Validation expérimentale
Selon le Climat de Lecture du titre au sein duquel elle insérera, une même annonce verra donc logiquement croître ou décroître son efficacité publicitaire.
C'est ce résultat que nous allons maintenant nous attacher à valider par l'observation : parmi les multiples critères d'évaluation disponibles, nous avons retenu l'impact, au travers du score de reconnaissance.
Pourquoi l'impact, et non l'agrément, ou la modification d'image? Simplement parce qu'il s'agit du critère le plus couramment usité; mais le même exercice peut s'effectuer à partir de critères tels qu'image, propension à l'achat, etc.
Pour mener à bien cette ultime étape, nous avons utilisé une vingtaine de post-tests publicitaires réalisés en totale indépendance de nos recherches, par l'institut Démoscopie. Ces tests étaient doublement ciblés pour ne retenir comme interviewés :
- que des individus correspondant parfaitement à la cible de communication.
- que des individus ayant eu l'occasion d'être exposés au moins une fois au plan média. D'où un second filtre portant sur les habitudes de lecture.
Les individus interrogés appartiennent nécessairement à l'audience utile d'un ou plusieurs titres du plan média : du croisement des scores de reconnaissance, par les habitudes de lecture, se déduit le score de reconnaissance spécifique à chaque titre.
Sur la vingtaine de post-tests analysés, tous fournissent des résultats concordants; les deux que je vais vous présenter concernent, l'un, une annonce de produits de soins haut de gamme, Jeanne Gatineau, insérée dans Modes et Travaux, Marie-Claire, Elle, Madame Figaro et Cosmopolitan.
Et le second, une annonce pour une marque d'électroménager, Radiola, publiée dans Modes et Travaux, Prima, Femme Actuelle et Elle.
L'annonce Gatineau, très élitiste, transforme le produit, présenté en majesté, un signe de reconnaissance social. La femme qui achète un tel soin de beauté, tire avant tout satisfaction du regard porté sur elle par les autres femmes, d'où un Climat de Lecture conjuguant Extraversion et Distanciation.
Rappelons que celui de l'annonce Radiola, précédemment analysée, était, quant à lui, nettement Introverti.
Le score de reconnaissance de Jeanne Gatineau varie de 53,4% à 33,3%, de Cosmopolitan à Modes et Travaux, celui de Radiola, de 38% à 28,4%, de Modes et Travaux à Elle, ce qui, dans les deux cas, apparaît en parfait accord avec les analyses précédentes.
En d'autres termes, l'efficacité d'une annonce dépend étroitement du Climat de Lecture du titre au sein duquel elle est insérée.

Consommateurs professionnels – suite
Un ami me faisait remarquer que lorsque, dans ma dernière note consacrée au sujet, je dénonçais la non qualité des recrutements sur site Web ouvert, je visais directement un autre participant de l’émission : Nous ne sommes pas des anges, à savoir le responsable du site : ReunionDeConso.com. Et c’est tout à fait vrai, je le reconnais bien volontiers.
Le lendemain de ma participation, je me suis rendu sur le site, par curiosité ; puis je me suis inscrit, comme consommateur, juste pour voir la vitesse à laquelle je recevrais des propositions – alors que j’avais laissé des numéros de téléphone fantaisistes, n’ayant aucune envie d’être dérangé à la maison ou au bureau.
Et ça n’a pas tardé : avant la fin de la semaine, il m’était proposé de venir déguster des desserts ultra frais. Ici, on ne déguise rien, le questionnaire de recrutement se répand longuement sur les îles flottantes. Mais « seuls les participants à l’étude se verront remettre 20 euros en bons d’achat, à titre de remerciement ».
20 euros pour un test de 30 minutes : tout est clair, d’entrée !
Par prudence, il m’a quand même été demandé si par hasard je ne travaillais pas :
- dans une agence de publicité – non.
- dans une société d’études de marché – non.
- dans une surface de vente de produits alimentaires – non.
- chez un fabricant de produits alimentaires – toujours non.
Responsable des études d’un grand groupe industriel après voir longtemps travaillé en institut pour des clients tels que Danone ou Nestlé, pas de problème, je suis certainement pas trop déformé par mon métier ; pas plus que par mes fonctions dans l’interprofession : en tous cas, l’expérience est intéressante.
Je me suis aussi amusé à remplir le Questionnaire de démonstration : car l’institut réalise aussi des études quantitatives.
Arrivé à : « Combien de fois au cours des 12 derniers mois avez-vous acheté, commandé ou réservé via Internet à des fins privées ? », je bloque : j’ai répondu « 0 ». Ce qui n’empêche pas le site de me demander ensuite : « Quel était le montant total en francs ou en euros du dernier achat privé que vous avez effectué ? » : j’essaie « 0 », ce qui me parais assez logique, vu que je n’ai jamais rien acheté via Internet ! Perdu, si je veux avancer, il me faut mentir, sinon ça coince ! Erreur de programmation ?
On se croirait revenu au bon vieux temps de la nouvelle économie, quand tout était permis, le meilleur comme le pire. Surtout le pire, dans le cas présent.
Cela étant, le site annonce honnêtement la couleur : « participez à des tables rondes pour gagner de l'argent et des cadeaux ». Par contre, si vous cherchez un recrutement sérieux, amis annonceurs… passez vite votre chemin !
